The wolf man
"Even the man who has a pure heart and gathers himself in prayer every day can become a wolf if the aconite flowers and the full moon shines in the evening."
The iconic 1941 film directed by George Waggner, a milestone in horror cinema, in an overwhelming comic book transposition.
The Forties. The young Larry Talbot returns to his wealthy home in Wales, to reunite with his father left alone after the disappearance of his older brother. He soon falls in love with a girl, Gwen, daughter of an ambiguous antique dealer from whom he buys a cane with a silver pommel in the shape of a wolf's head. After an evening spent having his fortune told by a group of gypsies, Larry comes across a wolf and, in trying to kill it, is bitten on the chest. In the throes of nightmares and visions of aberrant rituals, the next day the protagonist will realize that he has fought against a werewolf and from that moment his life will change forever.
A great classic of vintage horror cinema, which has undergone several reinterpretations over the years and which now lives again in the evocative illustrations of the cartoonist Sergio Vanello with the texts by Luca Franceschini. Starting from the outline of the famous film, the story has been retold and adapted to the language of comics, emphasizing the "horror" dimension, the visionary nature and the constant unresolved man-beast dualism. A metaphorical journey into the human psyche to discover a latent animal aspect, frightening and fascinating at the same time.
Curiosity
Upon its theatrical release, The Wolf Man was a resounding success and landed director Waggner an important management role within Universal's horror department. Actor Lon Chaney Jr. played his most famous alter-ego, still taken as a model today. With this film, the Wolf Man powerfully entered the pantheon of the great monsters of Universal Pictures, the Universal Classic Monsters.
